Beat the Winter Blahs

Some years the winter months seem to drag on and on, many times making us dream of summer and wanting to rid ourselves of the winter blues. Depending upon where you live, the winter can force you stay indoors, making the winter blues feel so much more blah. Beat your seasonal depression by changing a few simple things in your life and the wait for summer won’t feel as long.

Lighten Up

The winter blues come from many different things, including having to see the same surroundings over and over again. This includes your home. Beat that blah feeling by lightening up the décor in a single room, or if you feel ambitious, the entire house. Hang light colored curtains that allow more natural light to enter your home and hang a mirror on the opposite wall from the window. This will let more sunshine in, brightening up the room and your spirits.

Change the color of the room’s walls or add splashes of bright colors throughout the room. The bright colors will get you in a summer mindset, ultimately cheering you up. A good color to add is green. Add green to the room in the form is dishtowels, lamp, pillow or blanket.

You can even keep some of those holiday decorations up a little bit longer. Take down everything that is Christmas related and leave holiday-neutral items up. For example, keep the white lights hanging in your windows and the wreath, but store the Christmas tree.


Personal Makeover




Visit the spa or salon and have a complete personal makeover done. Cut and color your hair. Have your nails painted and get a pedicure. Heck, while you’re at it, get a massage. Not only will you feel better about the way you look, you will feel refreshed, relaxed and upbeat.




Live Healthy

By simply living a healthier lifestyle, you will successfully combat the winter blues. Get outside and take a walk or jog during the day. This will get you some sunshine, fresh air and make you feel better about your body. Exercise regularly during the winter months, eat a proper diet and get enough sleep (at least eight hours a night).

Clothing Makeover

Now that you’ve been living healthier, this is a good time to change out your wardrobe. Get rid of anything that doesn’t fit, is torn or faded. Donate the items that are still wearable to a local shelter or Goodwill center. Replace unwanted items with new, in style clothing, such as cute boots, pants and even a new winter jacket. Combine this with your personal makeover, and you’ll feel like a whole new person.




Fun Times

Set a time each week to sit with your entire family. This time can be used to play games or watch a movie together. By doing this, not only do you get to regularly spend time together, you avoid feeling down because everyone is too busy to take the time to be together. Plus, the excitement will boost your spirits on a weekly basis.

Don’t let your spirits get down after the holidays are over. Take the time clear your mind, think positively and enjoy the time you have before the summer hits. It will be here before you know it.
