New Year's Resolution: Have More Fashion Fun

by - Wednesday, January 02, 2013

The lights and candles are put away. The carols have been sung, and the New Year has been rung in with a festive bash. Perhaps you even snagged a few smooches under the mistletoe. Now that the holiday season is over, you may find yourself feeling a bit down, with the prospect of a few more long winter months before warmer weather arrives. Experimenting with fashion is a great way to brighten your spirits in the new year.

Push Your Fashion Boundaries
When thinking about New Year’s resolutions, consider including a fashion-related goal in the list. Urge yourself to push your fashion boundaries in the new year, giving yourself the freedom to try something new. You’ll want to be true to your personal style, but feel free to play with color, texture and silhouettes. Or try to add more accessories to pull your look together.

Use this Season’s Boldest Colors
For 2013, fashionistas are certainly not sticking to boring grayscale colors. Instead, the hottest trend is bold splashes of color. Rock the look by wearing a great pink dress that hits just below the knee, pairing it with rock ‘n roll booties. Alternatively, find a pair of neon bright leggings or skinny pants and pair them with an equally bold top. Just keep your accessories to a minimum and avoid neon prints, which can look costumey. If bold colors aren’t your thing, put a whole new twist on black and white by incorporating a graphic pattern into your look. This fashion forward style is unexpectedly glamorous.

Play with Fun Silhouettes
Fashion is all about change and risk-taking, so shake things up with some new silhouettes. Perhaps you’re a pencil skirt kind of gal. To keep things fresh, try a brightly colored mini with black tights, which will elongate your silhouette. Or ditch the skirt entirely for a structured pair of pants in an unexpected hue. Another great look that is on-trend is showing off a peek-a-boo midriff style (you’ll want a warm coat if you live in a cold climate). Be wary of showing too much skin, which can look tacky. For an alternative chic silhouette, find a great peplum dress or skirt; just make sure that the peplum hits your waist at the right length to accentuate your figure rather than make it look like you have broad hips.

Find Fun, Sassy Accessories
Accessories should enhance your outfit and push it a touch further, while staying cohesive with your overall look. For example, if you have a structured dress in a graphic pattern, a gorgeous cuff bracelet and understated earrings will let the rest of your look shine. If you’re rocking a vibrant orange dress, a great belt to accentuate your waist and gold dangly earrings may be just the thing.

This year, resolve to be bold and daring in your fashion choices. Leave the safe looks behind, challenging yourself to add a bit of edge to every outfit. Playing with new colors, textiles, and silhouettes is sure to pull you out of your winter doldrums and launch you into a happy, carefree mood.
