5 Must-Have Accessories for Spring and Summer 2013

by - Thursday, February 28, 2013

Don't let those gray skies fool you—spring is almost here! If you don't believe me, check out your local shopping mall, which is just now getting stocked up on all those essential items for the warmer days ahead. Although some of your favorite winter accessories can be worn well into spring (such as headbands and bangles), a few others (like scarves and gloves) will naturally get left behind. To make up for your loss and get your wardrobe ready, check out the following five must-have spring accessories for serious fashionistas.

1. Statement Necklaces

I'm absolutely in love with this fun fashion trend, which can pretty much make your outfit without even really trying. I recommend having a collection of fun necklaces in bright color schemes for summer, with a focus on those hues predicted to be a major hit for the upcoming season. Mint is especially big right now, and Pantone recently predicted the popularity of Dusk Blue, Monaco Blue, African Violet and Poppy Red, all of which are great colors to work into your outfit with these classy accessories.

2. Wedges

For the height of heels with slightly less discomfort, wedges are the ultimate summer/spring shoe for a feminine and sophisticated final touch to your outfit. Studs and other embellishments are popular styles this season, while classic animal prints, polka dots and floral patterns are always safe for basic accessorizing. Strappy wedges are another big theme this season, including ballet slipper-esque crisscrossing ties.

3. Motocross Boots

While you're still trudging through the slush during this awkward seasonal transition phase, why not arm your feet with a pair of edgy and protective motocross boots? No longer just for competitive racing, motocross boots add a tough element to your outfit that looks fabulous with the edgy studs and crosses trends on the fashion scene today.

4. Fedoras

When wearing a fedora, confidence is key. So while you're accessorizing your outfit, make sure to sprinkle your attitude with sass to really rock this slightly unconventional look. A brown or beige fedora looks awesome with a floral print dress, brown riding boots and a hippie-esque mesh vest for a folksy hipster look.

5. Fun Umbrellas

You probably don't think of an umbrella as a real accessory, but how often have you left the house with your tattered Wal-Mart-brand, basic black umbrella and thought, "This doesn't even match my outfit?" With the typical rainy days of spring, you're probably going to spend a lot of time strutting through the streets with your umbrella, so why not invest in one you can be proud of? A transparent eggshell-shaped umbrella can be a perfect neutral design to keep your outfit center stage, while a Burberry-esque plaid can add the perfect high-end touch to your look. Classic yellow is always a great choice for a spring umbrella, but don't be afraid to experiment with fun animal prints for a more fierce finale.

The hardest part about shopping for your spring wardrobe is knowing where to begin. These five must-haves are a great place to start, but make sure to incorporate your own unique fashion tastes into your spring shopping spree. Remember: fashion isn't just about following trends; it's about making them your own.
