They're Here, They're Sheer and They're Ready for Spring Fashion

by - Tuesday, March 26, 2013

The breezy and barely there spring sheer trend is putting the ‘90s to shame. Unlike the hit this trend made in classic ‘90s films like “Clueless,” sheer fashion is taking a chic, sophisticated, and slightly risqué turn in 2013. Unfortunately, wearing this trend right is just as difficult as it looks, but learning the rules of styling sheer can make each outfit live up to its full fashion potential.

Rule #1: Mix Sheer with Opaque

Layering is a huge trend this spring and it offers the perfect opportunity to play down the riskiness of sheer by pairing it with opaque pieces. Light chiffon adds a luminescent look to solid fabrics that can bring elegance to a basic outfit. Meanwhile, a printed or patterned sheer blouse can be emphasized with a solid-colored camisole underneath. You can also play with color by using contrasting camisoles under sheer linen tops for a bold daytime look. When it comes to sheer dresses and skirts, always wear a shorter solid slip underneath to keep it classy.

Rule #2: Wear Stylish Lingerie

Sheer has brought on another edgy trend for spring/summer 2013: stylish lingerie. If you're feeling bold and want to look hot for an evening out, wear a sheer top by itself with some stylish lingerie underneath. Bra tops, bustiers and bandeaus look fabulous with a see-through blouse and are perfect for adding a hint of color and design to your look. For extra glitz and glam, opt for embellished bras (complete with rhinestones and studs) to create a futuristic look.

Rule #3: Pile on Accessories

You know how a solid top just doesn't feel complete without a cute necklace or bracelet? The same idea applies to sheer clothing. If you're rocking a patterned look, stick with gold or silver necklaces or pearl charm bracelets to add sparkle without putting too many colors into the mix. For simpler, solid styles like black and white, add a touch of color by coordinating bangles and chandelier earrings.

Rule #4: Choose Sheer Detailing

If a full sheer blouse or skirt is just out of the question for your style, try sheer detailing instead. Sheer detailing allows you to selectively expose, so you can keep as much to the imagination as you'd like. Sheer backs are a big trend right now—especially with lace detailing and other unique accents. Since the cut-out trend is so big right now, you can even rock two trends at once by sporting pieces with side or shoulder sheer fabric placement.

Sheer isn't for the faint of heart, but you don't have to be the boldest babe in the room to wear this edgy trend. These fashion rules offer a wide range of ways to wear this versatile fabric—from see-though, skin-showing styles to shiny accents or solid base layers.
