Guest Post: It’s All White Now: How to Wear White for SS13

by - Tuesday, May 28, 2013

It might still be grey and horrible outside, despite the fact that it’s May, sunny days might be rarer than a non-scripted line on Made in Chelsea but it’s time to get some use out of our new season wardrobes. They might not be weather appropriate but if you wait for the sun in this country you may never wear sandals and bare legs again.

One of our favourite trends of SS13 is far and away white on white, it’s definitely one of the harder trends to tackle, and it’s certainly not a case of chucking on every item of white that you currently house in your closet. White is a welcome trend for us, it feels super fresh compared to the blacks and greys that permeate our winter wardrobes, think of the white on white trend as a spring clean for your closets.

White was trotted down the runways of all of the major shows including some of our favourites; Alexander Wang, Chanel, Dior, Simone Rocha and Damir Doma who all put their own spin on the trend.

White has always been a safe bet for SS but it’s rarely been seen worn since the Backstreet Boys wore it in their ‘I Want it That Way’ video, gosh, those boys were so ahead of their time! But the way to wear white this season is to make sure you mix it up, play around with shape, texture, layers, sheer panels and different cuts. There are two obviously different ways to rock this trend; the first uses the idea of virginal white and plays around with super feminine styles and materials (think a lot of broiderie anglaise) whilst the second method is to wear the trend in a futuristic way with clean lines and minimalist shapes that look really fresh.

Unfortunately unless you’re a six foot tall model with a waist the size of a small child’s it is difficult to pull off some of these high fashion, strait off the runway looks, so if that is the case then we’ve put together a little guide on how to wear white in a more accessible way. So weather you’re looking to smarten up office wear or simply after a super stylish look for a special occasion then we take a look at some of this season’s key pieces to help you look white hot with ease.

1.       Glow in the Dark embroidered leather skirt – Alexander Wang - £1,673 – If we had the budget most of our clothes would have a tag with Alexander Wang’s name on it but alas we don’t have the funds. This amazing leather skirt is completely perfect for the white trend, its shape is feminine but still brilliantly directional at the same time; try wearing with chunky heels and an oversize tee for ultimate word in off duty chic.

2.       Oversized Biker Jacket – TOPSHOP - £60 – Slightly more within our price-range we believe that a white biker will be an essential statement piece for this season, wear with anything from skinny jeans to pretty dresses and you can’t go wrong. It’s the perfect seasonal twist on a wardrobe staple.

3.       Panelled Cigarette Trouser – Matthew Williamson - £515 – We have been lusting after the perfect pair of cigarette pants for a while now and these white ones from Matthew Williamson are ideal for those days where the weather can’t make up its mind (every day here in the uk!) Try wearing with a cropped top and jacket to finish the look.

4.       High Neck Crop Top – Jane Norman - £12 – polo neck tops are back with a vengeance this season so this brilliant top from Jane Norman is definitely a wise investment, team with a high-waisted skirt or jeans for a sexy on-trend ensemble that shows off a little bit of skin without being over the top.

5.       Tulip Top – Jacquemus - £135 – Steer clear of wearing an outfit that is all white and totally tight for fear of looking like you just stepped off the set of TOWIE, stick to oversized shapes and really play around with your silhouette, this super cool tulip top is the perfect item paired with a pencil skirt or tapered trousers, we love the tuck detailing at the middle!
6.       Triangle Bag – MM6 by Maison Martin Margiela - £340 – This slouchy triangle bag from Maison Martin Margiela is the perfect amount of on trend and cool nonchalance, the ideal size to carry round all of your everyday essentials it’s one of our favourite pieces and would look great teamed with denim and neon touches.
7.       Laminated High Heeled Sandals with Ankel Straps –Zara - £32 – We’ve had our eye on these stunning white heels from Zara for a few weeks now, with such lovely heels we’d definitely want to wear them every day but in reality we’re not sure how much use we’d actually get out of them! With pointed toes and an ankle strap they couldn’t be more on-trend; we might just have to get them after all!
So there you have it some of our key pieces for white this season, it’s a cool, fresh and flattering trend that will suit almost anyone no matter what your colourings. Just remember that there is no point investing in beautiful white garments if you don’t take the time to read the washing instructions. There’s nothing worse than off white- grey clothes, invest in some special detergent for white clothes, you won’t regret it!
What do you think of the all-white trend, will you be trying it out this season or steering clear?
