Fashion inspires décor

As the birds start chirping, fresh green grass peeks through the ground and trees blossom, it's time to start thinking of changing things up around the house to usher in the new season. Now, before you rush out to buy all the latest copies of home decorating magazines at the supermarket, why not take inspiration from another place: runways around the world. It might not be the usual place to turn for decorating inspiration, but there some great trends there to be had replicated throughout your home and wardrobe.

Big, bold stripes

On Your Body: With about as many options as there are people in the world, there's a place for this trend in everyone's closet. Even better: many pieces can be worn for multiple seasons, making your dollars stretch a little further. Pair a striped shirt with jeans or denim capris and you've got an all-American look. Wear red and white stripes with a solid navy colored top or bottom, and you're ready for a day at the beach. And, if you dare, give the top-to-bottom stripes look a try.

For the more conservative, try a striped scarf, headband or flats.
In Your Home: The right stripes can fit into any home's existing decor: add striped throw pillows to a solid sofa; buy a stripped bedding set; or brighten up the bathroom with a striped shower curtain or towels. You can also try your hand at repurposing items, like artificial Christmas trees and wreaths, and decorating them with bows made from striped ribbons.

On Your Body: It's not just for brides this season. Lace looks lovely as an overlay on a skirt or dress or as an inset in a blouse for a more risqué look. Top fashion designers are creating looks that can be worn on any occasion, from a day at the office to a night out on the town and everything in between.

In Your Home: Add a layer of interest by channeling your creative side and whipping up some lace shams to go over solid colored pillows, or frame that vintage lace that your great-grandmother knit and hang it for a great focal piece in your living room.

Black and white

On Your Body: To many, the mere mention of the word spring conjures up images of pastel Easter candies and little girls' Easter dresses. This season, push aside the colors best suited for 3-year-old Emma and break out the ever-bold black and white. Pair slim-cut black pants with a crisp black and white top. Color blocked dresses, checkered skirts and striped sweaters are also must-haves this spring.

In Your Home: Spice up that boring all white guest bathroom with some touches of black, like a new shower curtain, bath mat or wall decor. Incorporate a black and white rug or frame set into a room that's monochromatic and could use a change.

As you break out your sandals, skirts and summery sweaters, use these ideas to help you update your wardrobe and home for this season. Staying in style doesn't require a four-figure clothing budget; all you need is a little knowledge of the trends, creativity and time to put the ideas into practice. What are you waiting for? Run to your closet and get started dreaming up new outfit and room ideas now!
